by Obiakor David

If most of you family members, like father, mother, or uncle have had diabetes, chances are that you can, like myself, take some helpful strategies straight away to stop you from getting the disease. The first thing to quickly do is:

1. Get a Diabetes Test: In order to know your status as a diabetic patient, you must to under go a diabetes test called (FPGT) that is Fasting Plasma Glucose Test, or Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT). These tests are easy, fast and very cheap. Anybody can under go the tests especially in these days when children from the age of ten years have diabetes.

With (FPG), glucose level between 100 and 125mg/dl signifies pre- diabetes while a person with glucose level of 126 mg/dl or higher has diabetes. In the OGTT test, the glucose level is measured after a fast and two hours after drinking a glucose rich beverage. If after the two hours, the glucose level is between 140 and 199 mg/dl, the persons tested has a pre - diabetes, but if the glucose level is at 200mg/dl or higher, the person has diabetes.

2. Exercise: Exercise is good for your health, since diabetes is linked with over weight, it follows that you must exercise daily to shed that weight.

Thirty minutes walk in the morning or in the evening is not bad but if you can make it one hour better. Nothing serious, just a simple walk done regularly over a time well be alright.

Exercise improves your body’s sensitivity and can also help you lose weight. This way you can cut your risk of developing diabetes by more than half.

3. Diet: Your food should only be made up of proteins and irons. Eat more of fish, unripe plantain, beans, poultry and low fat dairy products. You can also take high complex fiber foods like soy foods. Most people with type 2 diabetes are overweight so you must remain slim and look young to avoid this killer disease.

4. Natural Treat:- You can also protect your self from this killer disease by taking a supplement of 200mg of vitamin E daily. This is like a wall of defence against diabetes.

5. Lifestyle: Diabetes has been described as a disease of life style. This is true because the disease most times happens as a result of what we eat with our mouth and what we do with our body. Therefore try to stop, a. Smoking. b. Drinking alcohol. c. Avoid stress

If any of your family members have had diabetes disease, it means that you are at risk, so the only way out is to take the above steps now.
